As part of Boston Scientific’s broader Healthcare Provider (HCP) Experience initiative, focused on unifying the customer journey across digital touchpoints, I was asked to rethink how product imagery functioned at scale. The existing photography lacked consistency, missed essential technical details, and failed to meet GS1 compliance standards, creating roadblocks for both e-commerce and global product information management (PIM) systems.
The solution needed to serve high-volume marketing and commercial needs while maintaining a consistent, regulatory-compliant presentation. It also needed to support a content ecosystem used by over 900 hospital accounts worldwide, making clarity, accuracy, and brand alignment critical.
This project set a new visual standard for product imagery and workflow processes. My role helped transform a fragmented asset pipeline into a scalable system that supported global teams and the launch of Boston Scientific’s new direct-to-consumer e-commerce site.
A Framework Merging Modern Aesthetics with Regulatory Compliance
To bridge the gap between compliance, clinical clarity, and visual storytelling, I designed a photography framework that merged modern aesthetics with GS1 requirements. This included capturing mandated UDI markers and key technical details that had previously gone undocumented. The use of regulated studio lighting and simplified backgrounds elevated imagery to premium standards, helping differentiate Boston Scientific’s products in a highly competitive medical device landscape.
Systematizing the Visual Workflow
To support consistency and scale, I created image production guidelines that standardized execution across product lines. These covered composition, camera angles, cropping, lighting, and styling to meet both brand and regulatory requirements.
I also developed a structured taxonomy with standardized metadata and file naming conventions, integrated into Boston Scientific’s global PIM platform. This was supported by end-to-end process documentation covering everything from intake and planning to production, post, and delivery.
The system became a single source of truth for internal teams, agency partners, and photography vendors, enabling compliant, high-quality imagery at scale without sacrificing brand clarity.
From Vision to Reality
The final system provided Boston Scientific with a scalable, compliant, and visually unified photography library that supported both marketing and operational needs. It improved efficiency across teams, reinforced trust through clinical clarity, and helped position the company as a category leader in product presentation. Most importantly, it connected global brand standards with day-to-day content operations, turning product photography into a reliable, strategic asset across platforms.
