For many years, I resided in Massachusetts without having any knowledge of the presence of the Charles River Museum of Industry & Innovation in Waltham. I jumped at the opportunity to offer my creative expertise to promote their annual Steampunk City Festival (now known as the Watch City Steampunk Festival). I finally had a chance to put my obsession with technical drawings and Victorian flare to use! I created this illustration by utilizing a collection of antique locomotive references I just happen to have on hand (no, seriously). I thoroughly enjoyed the process of delving into ornamental and historical typefaces to discover the perfect aesthetic for this poster. Taking it one step further, I knew someone who worked in a factory that etched metal and was able to broker a great deal to get this design etched on a real piece of copper.
